NEW PLAYS SERIES: Staged Reading: new play AN ORDINARY STRING by Hannah Bisewski

Join us Wednesday, May 9th at 8pm for a public Staged Reading of MFA UT Playwriting graduate Hannah Bisewski’s newest play An Ordinary String.

An Ordinary String is a mind-bending play within-a-play-within-a-play, in which stories encompass wandering theatre troupes, a steampunk turn-of-the-century magician, and an Old World cabaret. Audience members enter this theatrical realm faced with a choice: the seat chosen around this four-sided set constructed of four equilateral stages determines one of four possible realities to be experienced. Three sides of the story remain a mystery.

What will you choose?

Bisewski originally developed and premiered An Ordinary String, co-directed by Melanie Scruggs and Hannah Bisewski, last fall during its earliest stages as part of the Plan II-affiliated Broccoli Project’ at the University of Texas.

Following the Blue Theatre Staged Reading of An Ordinary String on Wednesday, May 9th at 8 p.m., the original production’s set design remains on exhibit in our SecondStage Gallery Space throughout the month.

Open Exhibit Hours: Thursdays thru Sundays, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Staged Reading and Exhibit Tours are FREE to attend and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Reception to Follow.

New Plays Series/Writer Development Program is designed to give emerging playwrights an opportunity to develop new works for the stage through open public staged readings held throughout the season. We encourage you to attend talk-backs with playwright, actors and director following each performance as feedback and open discussion play a fundamental part in the writer’s creative process.

Bringing New Works of Theatre to the Austin Stage.

newplaysseriesfront_flyer

The Blue Theatre is excited going into it’s second year of bringing new theatre works from the ‘Page to the Stage’!

The New Plays Series gives playwrights the opportunity to work with actors and a director in the production of a staged reading and to experience the effect of their play on an audience. Staged Readings are performed and directed by theatre professionals and are followed by open discussion between the audience, actors, director and playwright, when in attendance. We believe feedback is an important part of the creative process and the audience plays a crucial role. After each staged reading, the audience is invited to participate in a open discussion with the actors, director and the playwright, if available.

PERFORMERS

SKY CANDY AERIALISTS presents Chelsea Laumen on Silks. Chelsea Laumen is a professional performance artist, teacher and community activist. An integral part of the Birimbau Academy of Capoiera, Chelsea has served as a co-choreographer, core artist, student and also teacher of the Afro-Brazilian martial dance form in her beloved New Mexican community.

SAVONNE THE MINX is a versatile-vixen who can point tootsies en pointe, tappa-tappa tap dance, and saunter and twirl to a mishmash beat.  A magnetic medley of the magical kind let her exceed your expectations, unbind your boundaries, and find your fancies. She wears the music like a shade of lipstick, and can quick-change garters in the dark with only seconds to spare. Savonne danced with the award-winning dance troupe, Eye Candy Burlesque, and has performed everywhere from Kansas City to Little Rock. A magnetic medley of the magical kind, so let her exceed your expectations, unbind your boundaries, and find your fancies!

CIARA BLOSSOM, a.k.a. the Hula Hoop Enchantress specializes in spiral seduction with 2 tiny fire-hoops, and the smooth fluid movements of L.E.D glow hoops.  She brings a funky fresh vibe to any and all festivities.  Armed with a giggly golden smile, ornate handmade costumes, and wicked sick tricks to mesmerize and inspire audiences long after the show is over. Get ready to be captivated by the smooth magic of movement!

STRAWBERRY ignites her hoops of fire to manipulate the flame through play and dance.  This fire twirling Sprite is sure to delight!

IRIS THE ARTISTE transforms into the bodyart painting Gypsy who won’t tell you your future but will help create one with you. Just give her a section of your body, details of your New Year’s Resolution and let the creation begin.

BANDS

MINOR MISHAP MARCHING BAND is a renegade brass band– Bourbon Street meets Budapest.  An absurd expression of boisterous pandemonium and washboard-tuba-punk-rock ridiculousness: fun, loud and in the streets.

INTERSTELLAR TRANSMISSIONS is carnivalesque Shamanic Tribal Rock Fusion blending exotic sacred healing scales and frequencies with dynamic fast changing, primal rhythms.  Interstellar Transmissions takes you on an epic journey of the soul that encompasses a vast spectrum of emotional depth, magic, excitement and color.
FunkOtron Weird Magazine writes, “The Energy FunkOtron put out was intense and grooving with sick sounding funk rhythms that border with psychedelic jazz. The funky riffs were so tight, I had to step back and slap myself!

HOLDING SPACE is a triply element to Jazz Psychedelic Funk.
